Android 17's newest beta feature is built for exactly the kind of content that's dominated YouTube and TikTok for years: reaction videos. Screen Reactions activates your phone's front camera and floats a small, resizable, movable window with a live feed of your face directly over whatever's happening on your screen — a game, an app walkthrough, someone else's video you're reacting to. On-device AI cuts your background out in real time, so it looks like you're sitting in front of a green screen without needing one.
To use it: swipe down for Quick Settings, tap Recording Options, choose Entire Screen, then select Selfie Camera or Reactions. It only works in full-screen recording mode — Android's per-app recording mode doesn't support the camera overlay, which is a real limitation if you only wanted to react to one app in a multi-window setup.
This is a genuinely good feature. Unboxings, app walkthroughs, gameplay commentary, reacting to a video someone sent you — all of it gets easier without needing a third-party app or a separate camera setup. It's also going to eat your phone's storage faster than you expect, and here's the part that doesn't show up in the announcement posts.
Two Video Streams, One File, Bigger Than You'd Think
A normal screen recording is one video stream: whatever's on your screen, encoded at whatever resolution and frame rate you set. Screen Reactions is recording and compositing two streams simultaneously — your full screen plus a live camera feed with active background removal running in real time — into a single output file.
That second stream matters more than it sounds like it should. Screen content (an app interface, static text, a slow-scrolling feed) is often low-motion and compresses efficiently. A live camera feed of a person's face is the opposite: constant micro-motion, lighting variation, texture detail in skin and hair — visually complex content that forces the video encoder to allocate more bitrate to maintain quality. Combine the two into one recording and the total file size climbs well past what the screen content alone would produce.
A 5-minute Screen Reaction recording at 1080p commonly lands in the 300-600MB range depending on how much motion is in both the screen content and your camera feed — noticeably more than the roughly 150-300MB you'd expect from a screen recording alone at the same length and resolution. For a creator recording several of these a day, that adds up to gigabytes fast, and most of these files are headed straight to a platform that's going to re-encode them anyway.
What to Do Before You Upload
- Record at 1080p, not 4K, unless you specifically need it. Screen Reactions content is almost always viewed on a phone screen — a game clip, a reaction, a walkthrough — where 4K adds file size without adding perceptible quality for the viewer.
- Compress before uploading anywhere, not after. Every major platform re-compresses uploaded video on their end regardless of what you send them, and letting your original file sit at full size just means a slower upload and a bigger local storage footprint while you wait, for no quality benefit at the other end.
- Trim before you compress. Reaction recordings often have dead air at the start and end — cut that first, then compress the trimmed result rather than compressing the full recording and cutting afterward.
- If you're archiving the raw recording for later re-editing, keep one full-quality copy and compress everything else. You don't need five different compressed exports of the same clip sitting around; one high-quality archive plus one compressed version for actual posting covers both needs.
This is the same underlying tradeoff every creator tool eventually runs into: the feature that makes recording effortless doesn't make the resulting file small, and it was never going to. Android built the recording half of the workflow. The compression half is still on you, and it's the difference between filling your phone's storage every few days versus every few weeks.
