July is the busiest month of the year for renovation work. Kitchen remodels, bathroom upgrades, deck builds, exterior painting — the kind of jobs that photograph well and that clients want to see before hiring. If you're a contractor who hasn't invested in marketing, before-and-after photos are the cheapest and most effective portfolio you have. They're also, for most trades, being handled in a way that cancels most of their value.

This isn't about creative photography skills. It's about three specific technical problems that make good work look worse than it is.

Problem 1: The Lighting Lie Nobody Notices Until It's Too Late

The "before" photo gets taken while you're assessing the job — maybe early morning, maybe the room is messy, definitely not controlled lighting. The "after" photo gets taken when the work is done, usually when the client is home, often with better weather and all the lights on.

The problem is that the lighting difference between those two shots makes the comparison unfair in a way that experienced clients notice. The "after" looks better partly because of the work — and partly because it's 40% better lit. When a client sees a before-and-after where the "after" has warmer tones, better shadows, and brighter overall exposure, they can't separate "better lighting in photo" from "better quality of work." And skeptical clients often assume the worst: that you're making the before look bad on purpose.

The fix is simple. When you finish a job, recreate the same lighting conditions that existed in the before photo. If the before was taken with the overhead light off, keep it off. Same time of day if possible. Stand in the same spot, same distance from the wall, same angle. Turn on the flashlight mode on your phone if you used it in the before.

Consistent lighting makes the physical transformation more dramatic, not less — because you're removing the lighting variable and making the comparison purely about the work.

Problem 2: The File Format Your Website Can't Open

iPhone cameras default to saving as HEIC — Apple's proprietary high-efficiency image format. HEIC files are genuinely good: they're about half the size of an equivalent JPEG with similar quality. The problem is that HEIC support outside Apple's ecosystem is inconsistent. Google Sites won't accept them. Most WordPress installations without an additional plugin will reject them. A significant number of contractor-focused website builders (Builder.ai, GoDaddy Website Builder, Wix on older accounts) either refuse them or silently drop them with a vague error.

The result: a contractor takes eight excellent photos, tries to upload them to their website, and gets errors for six of them. They assume the site is broken. Actually, the site is fine — it just doesn't speak HEIC.

The fastest fix is to change your iPhone's camera format: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. This makes the camera save as JPEG by default. You lose some file efficiency (JPEG files at the same quality are 1.5–2× larger than HEIC), but you gain universal compatibility. Everything accepts JPEG.

If you want the efficiency of HEIC without the compatibility problem, the better solution is to shoot in HEIC and convert to WebP before uploading. WebP is supported by every modern browser and most website builders, and at quality 82 it's smaller than an equivalent JPEG. Converting HEIC to WebP takes about ten seconds per photo.

Problem 3: The Messenger Compression Chain

Here's the problem nobody talks about: a contractor shoots a great photo, sends it to their partner via iMessage to review, then uploads that iMessage version to the website, then copies the website image URL and sends it to the client. The photo has been re-compressed three times before anyone who matters has seen it.

Every time an image passes through a messaging app — WhatsApp, Messenger, iMessage (in some modes), Telegram — it gets re-compressed. WhatsApp is particularly aggressive: it reduces image quality to around 80% of the original and caps resolution at 1600px on the long edge. iMessage compresses photos when network conditions are poor, which happens constantly. Facebook Messenger compresses nearly everything.

By the time a potential client sees a photo that started as a crisp 12MP iPhone shot and passed through three compression steps, it might look noticeably worse than the original — and they're forming impressions of your work based on that degraded version.

The fix is to never use messaging apps as part of the distribution chain for portfolio photos. Send the original file. Or better: use a gallery link.

A dedicated gallery link — a URL you can share with potential clients that shows your portfolio in a browser — bypasses the compression chain entirely. The photos are hosted at their original quality (or your prepared quality, not messenger quality). Clients browse them on their phone or computer without any intermediate recompression. They can save favorites, share the link with a spouse or partner, and come back to it.

This is meaningfully different from "send as attachment" or "DM on Instagram." When someone sends a photo to a friend by DM, the platform compresses it. When someone shares a gallery link, the photos stay at whatever quality you uploaded.

For contractors, the gallery also solves the "before and after pair" problem. A gallery lets you show photos in order — before on the left, after on the right — which is far more persuasive than scattered photos in a photo dump where the client has to mentally pair them.

File Size on Your Website Portfolio Page

The last issue is load speed, and it compounds with the others. A contractor's portfolio page with ten unoptimized HEIC photos (the ones the site accepted) is carrying 80–120MB of image data. On a 4G mobile connection, that page takes 10–15 seconds to load. Most people abandon a page after 3 seconds.

You lose potential clients not because your work isn't good — they never waited long enough to see it.

The target for a portfolio page: each photo should be 150–350KB for a full-bleed display image. That means 1920×1080 at WebP quality 82, or 1920×1080 at JPEG quality 85 if WebP isn't available. The work you do in July — during peak season, with good natural light and fresh completed jobs — is the portfolio that gets you hired in October.
