Why "Below Normal" Is the Wrong Number to Plan Around
A seasonal forecast describes the whole Atlantic basin, not your specific coastline. NOAA's below-normal call is driven by a developing El Nino pattern and weaker trade winds — real atmospheric factors that reduce the total number of storms that form. None of that changes what happens if the one storm that does form takes aim at where you live. A below-normal season with one direct hit on your area is a worse outcome for you personally than an above-normal season where every storm stays offshore. The seasonal number is useful for insurers and emergency planners thinking about aggregate risk across an entire coastline; it's close to useless as a reason to personally deprioritize prep.
The Actual Reason Evacuation Photo Backups Fail
It's rarely a lack of intention. Almost everyone means to back up their photos before a storm. What actually happens is the backup gets pushed to the same 30-to-60-minute window as packing the car, securing the house, and deciding what else to bring — and a full phone photo library, often running 20-40GB or more on a phone that's been collecting images for years, does not finish uploading in that window. - Prioritize irreplaceable photos into a separate, smaller backup. Old family photos, scanned physical prints, anything you can't reshoot — get those into a dedicated folder that backs up fast and completely, separate from your general phone photo stream, so a partial upload during a real emergency still saves the things that actually matter most.
- Physically back up what you can't afford to lose to a connectivity failure. A local backup — a drive you can grab on the way out, or a second copy on a family member's device out of the storm's path — doesn't depend on internet access working at all, which matters if power or cell service goes down before you finish an upload.
- Test that you can actually access the backup from a different device. A backup you can't retrieve when your phone is lost or damaged isn't a backup, it's a false sense of security — check this once, now, not for the first time during an actual emergency.
The Storms Already on the Board This Year Are the Reminder, Not the Threat
Arthur and Bertha forming early doesn't mean this is shaping up to be a bad season — NOAA's below-normal call still stands. What it does mean is the season is real and already active, which is as good a prompt as any to finish backup prep this week instead of treating it as a someday task. The people who lose irreplaceable photos in a hurricane are almost never the ones who backed up too early. They're the ones who meant to, and ran out of time when the storm that mattered actually showed up.
