PNG vs WebP for UI Design Assets: When to Use Each Format and Why It Actually Matters

Developers have been told for years to switch everything to WebP. But for UI screenshots, design system exports, and graphic assets with transparency, the decision is not that simple. Here is the complete breakdown.

The Blanket Advice That Is Partially Wrong

"Switch all your images to WebP" has been the standard performance advice for several years, and for the most part it is correct. For photographic content, WebP at quality 80 is typically 25-35% smaller than a JPEG at equivalent visual quality with better color reproduction.

But for UI design assets, screenshots, design system exports, and interface graphics, the calculation is different. Sometimes PNG is the better choice. Sometimes WebP is clearly better. The key is understanding what each format is actually optimized for.

How Each Format Handles Different Content

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) uses lossless compression. Every pixel is preserved exactly as you exported it. This is non-negotiable for:

  • Vector-based graphics rendered to raster (icons, logos, illustrations)
  • Screenshots with text (compression artifacts around letterforms make text unreadable)
  • Images with large flat-color regions (screenshots of interfaces, UI mockups)
  • Anything requiring a transparent background

WebP (lossless mode) also supports lossless compression, but with a different algorithm (based on VP8L) that achieves 25-35% better compression than PNG for most content while remaining bit-for-bit identical.

WebP (lossy mode) uses a perceptual compression algorithm similar to JPEG but with fundamentally better encoding. For photographic content, this is the sweet spot.

For a dashboard screenshot, WebP lossy at quality 80 delivers a good visual result that is 82% smaller than PNG. But if you zoom in to the text labels, you will see the characteristic WebP compression artifacts around high-contrast edges (dark text on light backgrounds). For documentation images, product screenshots in marketing materials, or any context where someone will look closely at interface details, these artifacts are noticeable.

For the same image, WebP lossless gives you the same perfect output as PNG at 26% smaller file size. That is the right choice.

When PNG Wins

PNG is the correct format in these situations:

1. Logos and wordmarks A company logo rendered as a PNG preserves every edge. WebP lossy creates subtle color banding around flat-color shapes that is visible against certain backgrounds. Always use lossless formats (PNG or WebP lossless) for logo assets.

2. UI screenshots for documentation Technical documentation requires readable text in screenshots. PNG or WebP lossless. Never JPEG, never WebP lossy for these.

3. Images with transparency JPEG does not support transparency. WebP does (both lossy and lossless). PNG does. For transparent assets (icons on varying backgrounds, product cutouts), the choice is PNG vs WebP, never JPEG.

4. Pixel art and illustrations with hard edges Any image with hard, sharp transitions between colors compresses better losslessly. JPEG and WebP lossy both try to smooth these transitions, which creates banding artifacts in flat-color illustrations.

When WebP Wins

WebP outperforms PNG in these situations:

1. Hero images and photography Any photographic content: product photos, portraits, landscape backgrounds, team photos. Use WebP lossy at quality 80. The file size reduction is 25-40% over JPEG with equivalent or better visual quality, and the benefits over PNG are enormous (PNG is the wrong choice for photos entirely).

2. UI screenshots where file size matters more than pixel perfection For blog posts, social media, marketing assets where images will be viewed at normal zoom levels on web pages, WebP lossy at quality 85 is perfectly acceptable for interface screenshots. The text softness is not visible at normal viewing distance.

3. Background gradients and subtle color transitions Gradients compress extremely well in WebP. A full-screen gradient background might be 800 KB as a PNG and 45 KB as WebP lossy at quality 80, with zero visible difference.

4. Favicon and icon sets at small sizes (under 64px) At small display sizes, lossy compression artifacts are invisible. WebP for small icons saves space without any visual trade-off.

For new projects in 2026, design WebP-first. Offer PNG as fallback only if analytics show meaningful traffic from legacy browsers (check your browser stats before making this decision).

Practical Export Workflow for Design Teams

For teams exporting assets from Figma, Sketch, or similar tools:

Photography and scene backgrounds: Export as WebP from your tool if supported, or export PNG and convert in Optimage.
